Dubai: The Telecom Regulatory Authority (TRA) on Saturday announced that it has invited bids for mobile television broadcast lic-ences in the UAE.

The TRA held a public consultation on the licensing of broadcast mobile TV from May 28 to June 26. On June 17, a briefing was held on the draft invitation document in Abu Dhabi, where a public invitation was announced in all UAE newspapers.

Many interested parties attended the briefing and used the opportunity to get a better understanding of the draft invitation document and TRA's objectives. When consultation closed on June 26, responses were received from nine different organisations.

Feedback

Mohammad Nasser Al Ganim, TRA board member and director-general, said: "The TRA is pleased with the level of preparedness and seriousness of the interested parties.

"Having considered the feedback, the TRA has made changes to the draft invitation document where necessary, and is now publishing a report on the consultation as well as the final invitation to submit proposals for the provision of mobile TV transmission service in the UAE."

Would you prefer watching television on your mobile phone or in the traditional manner? Why? Would you be willing to pay more to gain access to this new technology? Mobile broadcast TV is definitely the future. It will be more personal and convenient. With the improvements in mobile phones, personal media players and in-car navigation devices, the feature will be integral to the expectations of consumers. The adoption and success however will depend on the quality of content and cost of service.
