Dubai : Nakheel denies media reports that The World project's 300 manmade islands are sinking. News reports cited a NASA picture as suggesting that the islands shaped like the world's land masses are sinking and merging back into Gulf waters. However, Nakheel said in a statement that the speculation is "wholly inaccurate".
A Nakheel spokesperson rejected the reports, noting that the islands were designed to last for hundreds of years.
"The whole project is built on a plateau of rocks. The islands aren't going anywhere," the spokesperson said. The official did admit that there has been some shifting of sands on the beach areas of some islands which may have falsely given the impression that the islands are moving.
