Pioneers in energy conservation recognised for efforts

Dubai: Shaikh Ahmad Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of Dubai Civil Aviation Authority and Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates Group, on Tuesday night handed out awards to corporations and individuals for their efforts in energy conservation.

An initiative of Dubai Quality Group, Emirates Energy Awards (EEA), under the patronage of His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, is taking the vision forward of Dubai Strategy 2015, which decrees the sustainable development of the emirate through green standards.

The awards comprised six categories. In the public corporation category, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) was the winner, while Tecom Investments won the prize in the private corporation category.

Saeed Mohammad Al Tayer, Managing Director and Chief Executive of Dewa, as the main sponsor of the award ceremony, said. "Dewa plays a role in fulfilling Shaikh Mohammad's vision to establish a basis for sustainable growth, alongside the other participating institutions, in a manner that secures the future of the coming generations and guarantees progress and success for our country."

Abdullah Al Amiri, chairman of EEA, said: "Our country is the first to support international efforts for energy saving principles. This is manifested in Shaikh Mohammad's visionary policies."

Individuals were also awarded for their efforts towards energy conservation.

A runner up in the energy engineer category, Faisal Ahmad Shaheen Janahi, manager of Special Projects and Refinery Energy coordinator, The Bahrain Petroleum Company said, "We are living in a region where energy is very cheap and people are really misusing it."

He added that awareness and education is required to use energy efficiently while keeping the next generations in mind.
