China has launched sweeping export controls on key minerals, probe into tech giant Google

The gloves are off: China has unleashed a powerful counterpunch against the US, escalating tensions in what could be the most intense trade war yet.
On Tuesday (February 4), China announced punitive tariffs of 10 per cent to 15 per cent on US goods, effective February 10, 2025.
The Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post reported that this was a direct retaliation for Washington’s decision to slap a 10 per cent tariff on Chinese products, citing drug control concerns.
The moves and countermoves could set up something much bigger — an economic war.
While both superpowers have the resources to engage in an extended trade conflict, the real question is whether both sides are truly prepared for the long-term effects.
Now, Beijing isn’t holding back — and Washington may have just provoked a response it wasn’t ready for.
EXPORT CONTROLS: The brewing battle extends beyond tariffs. China has also announced sweeping export controls on key minerals — potentially crippling industries that rely on Chinese resources. Moreover, the country has aunched an anti-monopoly investigation into US tech giant Google. It's a signal that the fight has expanded into the digital battlefield.
Economic growth and inflation
Tariffs on Chinese imports could drive up costs for American businesses and consumers, leading to inflationary pressure. Industries relying on Chinese goods—from electronics to auto parts—could see price spikes, impacting economic stability.
Supply chain disruptions
A prolonged trade war could further strain critical industries, particularly in sectors like technology, manufacturing, and pharmaceuticals, which heavily depend on Chinese components.
US jobs and business competitiveness
Tariffs could protect some domestic industries but hurt others. US farmers, for example, might face retaliatory tariffs from China, shrinking their market access. Likewise, multinational corporations relying on China for production might struggle with higher costs.
Technology and innovation rivalry
The battle isn’t just about goods — it’s also about dominance in AI, semiconductors, 5G/6G, new energy, autos and space exploration. The US has imposed restrictions on Chinese tech giants, while China is ramping up domestic innovation. A full-scale trade war could determine which country leads the next generation of technology.
Geopolitical and global trade relations
America’s allies and trading partners could be forced to pick sides. Countries reliant on both the US and China may navigate a tricky diplomatic path, potentially reshaping global trade alliances and economic power structures.
China’s Ministry of Finance hit back hard, imposing a 15 per cent tariff on US coal and natural gas imports.
The oil industry didn’t escape the fallout either — petroleum shipments from the US will now face a 10 per cent tariff, along with agricultural equipment, high-emission vehicles, and pickup trucks.
In 2024, the US exported around 81.9 million barrels, as per Bloomberg.
The ministry called out Washington’s move as a serious violation of World Trade Organisation (WTO) rules, warning that the US wasn’t just hurting itself — it was actively damaging trade cooperation between the two economic superpowers.
High-stakes showdown
Will the US retaliate with even harsher sanctions? Or will Beijing escalate further, striking at American tech, agriculture, or finance?
One thing is clear: this isn’t just a trade dispute anymore — this is an unfolding economic drama with global implications and no clear end in sight.
As tensions escalate, markets brace for volatility, industries face uncertainty, and the world watches anxiously.
While America has strong economic resilience, a full-blown trade war with China would have far-reaching consequences.
The battle over tariffs is more than just a numbers game — it’s a strategic fight for global influence, economic dominance, and tech supremacy.
The question is: who will blink first?
