UAE travellers planning a trip to Doha have a lot to look forward to
Doha: From self-boarding systems and designated chairs for ‘introverts’ to specialised services for the hearing challenged and a lush indoor tropical garden, the latest expansions at Hamad International Airport (DOH) in Doha aim to transform flight delays into a desirable experience. At least, that’s the vision outlined by DOH Chief Operating Officer (COO) Hamad Al Khater.
The new concourses – D and E - have been integrated into the existing terminal and feature advanced technology, including self-boarding gates, to improve passenger flow.
Al Khater said, “The opening of Concourses D and E marks a significant milestone in expanding our capacity and enhancing operational efficiency. This combined development streamlines passenger flow optimises resource management, and strengthens airline connectivity, ensuring smoother and more efficient passenger services.”
He said adding Concourses D and E allows us to accommodate 65 million passengers annually. The expansion includes: 17 additional boarding bridges - a 20 per cent increase, bringing the total to 62 gates, a 13 million annual passenger increase, and a significant reduction in bus transfers, cutting down by 350,000 trips per year and improving overall efficiency.
For UAE residents planning a trip to Doha or even a transit journey, here are some new facilities to look forward to.
Smart-boarding
The new concourse’s self-boarding systems streamline the boarding process for a faster, more efficient journey. Smart technology - which allows passengers to scan their boarding pass on scanners - enables swift document verification, reduces wait times, and ensures smooth transitions from terminal to aircraft. However, airport officials said that airline staff at the gate would still check passenger passports before they board the plane.
More gates
The expansion of Hamad International Airport with Concourses D and E significantly strengthens connectivity for both passengers and airlines. With increased gate capacity (9 new contact gates in Concourse D and 8 new gates in Concourse E) and optimised flight operations, the airport can accommodate more international carriers and offer more direct routes to key global destinations.
More retail space
The expansion also offers upgraded facilities to cater to diverse traveller needs. The new concourses also have a wider selection of premium retail outlets and global dining brands, including illy Café, Harrods Tea Room, and Gordon Ramsay Burger. Passengers can also look forward to ergonomically designed seating. Moreover, with the D&E Expansion, Qatar Duty-Free unveils over 10 new retail outlets for food and beverage venues. This increases the airport's retail space by 2,700 square meters.
Sustainability
Concourses D and E are designed to meet the GSAS 4-Star Design and Build Certification and aim to attain the LEED Gold Certification. The new development has energy-efficient systems, water management solutions, and optimised thermal comfort strategies.
Accessibility
Accessibility is a core focus as well. Features such as hearing loops, barrier-free pathways, spacious seating areas, and dedicated assistance services underscore the airport’s commitment to creating a traveller-centric environment.
The Orchard and more
The opening of Concourses D and E marks the final phase of Hamad International Airport’s broader expansion, which has introduced several landmark enhancements. The airport’s crown jewel – the Orchard, a lush indoor tropical garden – has been designed to make the travel journey for the passenger “stress-free”. The Orchard sprawls across 6,000 square meters, offering over 65 of the airport’s 180 world-renowned retail and dining experiences.
Families can access art installations and activity nodes across the South Plaza of the airport and board the passenger train to connect to the North Plaza and Orchard, where play and fun can continue. Families also have multiple dining and retail experiences befitting little travellers, such as Hamleys, the first Oreo Café at an airport and two food courts at Orchard.
