Dubai: As many as 15,000 Nissan vehicles are involved in a "voluntary recall" in the UAE, with about 10,000 of them being in Dubai and Northern Emirates.

The recall, part of a global effort involving two million vehicles, is being conducted to fix an ignition defect that could cause the engine to stall.

Nissan's Tiida, Infiniti QX56, Armada and Pathfinder 2006 models will be recalled to ensure continued driving experience, said Michel Ayat, chief executive of Arabian Automobiles Company, exclusive dealer of Nissan, Infiniti and Renault in Dubai and the Northern Emirates.

"We didn't receive any complaints. It is safe to drive these cars," Ayat told Gulf News yesterday.

The minor relay rectification process should take about 30 to 40 minutes and any drivers experiencing ignition problems may call in for an immediate fix, he said.

"The total affect in numbers in Dubai and Northern Emirates is 9,844," Ayat said, adding that it doesn't mean that all cars will necessarily have issues with the engine ignition relay.

The company will issue a public announcement bulletin today, under a relatively new regulation from the Ministry of Economy and consumer protection division.

The Japanese manufacturer will recall 2.14 million vehicles globally for this defect, which affects nine models. No accidents or injuries have yet been reported worldwide, the company said.

In Japan, Nissan will recall 834,759 vehicles, produced domestically between 2003 and 2006.

In March this year, Nissan Middle East recalled 32,000 cars regionally over brake pedal and fuel gauge defects.

The global impact was at a much larger scale of 500,000 units. The 2006 models of QX56, Pathfinder and the Armada overlapped in that recall as well.
