One adapter, multiple countries. Here's what travellers should know before plugging in

A travel adapter can fit into the palm of your hand, yet it solves a problem that international travellers have faced for decades: the world never agreed on a single electrical plug. According to World Standards' international electricity reference, countries use different combinations of plug shapes, voltages and frequencies. The UAE uses the familiar three-pin Type G socket, while much of continental Europe uses round-pin connections and North America relies on flat pins. Universal travel adapters bring several of these designs into one compact accessory. Their cleverness lies in mechanical compatibility, although there is an important difference between making a plug fit and making a device electrically compatible.
A universal adapter contains interchangeable or retractable pins designed to fit different wall sockets. Common configurations accommodate Type A connections in North America and Japan, Type C connections across much of Europe, Type G sockets in the UAE and UK, and Type I sockets in Australia.
The electrical supply is a separate consideration. The UAE operates at approximately 230 volts, while the United States uses 120 volts. An adapter changes the physical connection but does not convert the voltage.
Many modern phone and laptop chargers accept an input range of 100 to 240 volts, making them suitable for different electrical systems. Travellers should check the input rating on each charger before connecting it.
Devices designed for only one voltage may require an appropriate converter. Some appliances also depend on electrical frequency, which an ordinary voltage converter may not change.
Start with destination compatibility. The word 'universal' does not guarantee coverage of every socket, particularly certain grounded European outlets and specialised regional plugs.
Next, examine charging capacity. Multiple USB-A and USB-C ports can reduce the number of separate chargers needed, but the combined wattage matters more than the port count alone. A USB-C connection does not automatically provide laptop-level fast charging.
Look for a clearly stated current rating, appropriate fuse protection and grounding compatibility where required. Compact dimensions and retractable pins also make an adapter easier to pack.
The TESSAN Universal Travel Adapter brings five charging connections into one compact accessory, making it a practical choice for travellers carrying several electronic devices. It features one universal AC outlet, two USB-A ports and two USB-C ports, with a combined USB charging output of 21W. This allows travellers to connect compatible phones, tablets, cameras and other electronics without packing multiple USB chargers.
Its four interchangeable plug configurations are designed to cover more than 224 countries and territories, including popular destinations such as the UK, US, Japan, Thailand, Australia and much of Europe. However, it is not suitable for India or South Africa.
Measuring just 5 x 5.3 x 7.1cm and weighing 149g, the adapter takes up little luggage space. It also includes two 10A fuses, one serving as a spare. Importantly, it does not convert voltage, so connected appliances must support the destination's electrical supply. TESSAN specifies compatibility with devices accepting an input voltage of 100 to 250V.
For UAE residents travelling between multiple countries, its combination of international plug compatibility, USB-C charging and compact dimensions makes it a convenient all-round option.
The UGREEN Universal Travel Adapter is a practical choice for travellers visiting destinations that use German-standard Type F sockets, including Germany, the Netherlands, Spain and South Korea. Unlike adapters with several interchangeable destination plugs, this model features a fixed Type F plug and a universal input socket that accepts compatible UK, US, Australian and European plugs.
Rated at up to 250V and 10A, with a stated maximum capacity of 2300W, it can accommodate a variety of everyday electrical appliances, provided their voltage and power requirements match the local supply. Its compact design makes it convenient to carry, while the manufacturer also specifies protection against short circuits, overheating, overvoltage and overcharging.
One important distinction is that this adapter does not convert voltage or include USB charging ports. Its purpose is to connect compatible plugs to Type F wall sockets. For UAE residents travelling to Germany or other Type F destinations, it offers a straightforward way to use existing chargers and appliances without carrying several destination-specific adapters.
The RXSQUL Universal Travel Adapter is designed for travellers who carry several electronic devices and want to keep them charged through a single wall socket. Its 5-in-1 configuration combines one universal AC outlet, two USB-A ports and two USB-C ports, allowing up to five compatible devices to connect simultaneously.
With four international plug configurations covering more than 150 countries, including the UAE, UK, US, Japan, France, Germany, Australia and New Zealand, it offers flexibility for multi-destination holidays and business trips. Each USB-A port supports a maximum output of 5V/2.4A, while the USB-C ports are specified at 5V/3A, making them suitable for compatible smartphones, wireless earbuds, smartwatches and other portable electronics.
The adapter also features a built-in 8A overload fuse, a spare fuse, safety shutters and a plug-locking mechanism. Its AC socket supports a stated maximum of 880W at 110V or 2000W at 250V.
For UAE residents frequently travelling between continents, the RXSQUL offers a convenient combination of international plug compatibility and multiple USB charging connections.
The SAUNORCH Universal Travel Adapter is designed for frequent travellers who want to charge several electronic devices without carrying multiple adapters. Its 5-in-1 configuration combines one universal AC outlet, three USB-A ports and one USB-C port, allowing up to five compatible devices to connect simultaneously.
With four international plug configurations covering more than 200 countries and territories, including the UK, UAE, US, Japan, Australia and much of Europe, it offers a practical solution for multi-destination holidays and business trips. The USB-C port delivers up to 5V/3A, while the built-in Smart IC technology is designed to recognise connected devices and adjust charging current automatically.
The adapter supports AC input and output connections rated at 100 to 250V and up to 10A, with a maximum stated capacity of 2500W at 250V. It also includes an integrated 10A fuse, safety shutters, a plug-locking mechanism and flame-retardant housing.
For UAE residents travelling between Europe, Asia and North America, the SAUNORCH combines broad plug compatibility with convenient multi-device charging. However, it does not convert voltage, so appliances must be compatible with the destination's electrical supply.
A universal travel adapter can make international travel considerably simpler, but no single design should be assumed to cover every destination or electrical appliance. Plug compatibility, voltage requirements and USB charging output remain the deciding factors.
For a general-purpose travel kit, the TESSAN Universal Travel Adapter is the provisional top pick, particularly for travellers prioritising several charging connections in one compact accessory.
