Launching a new SUV in the Middle East is never a casual exercise. This is a region where vehicles earn their reputation through lived experience — searing temperatures, long intercity commutes, gravel trails, and dunes that have humbled even well-established 4x4s. Into this competitive space arrives the DEEPAL G318, positioned as a bold step forward for a young brand betting heavily on range-extended electrification and intelligent mobility.

According to Yin Tom, Deputy General Manager of Changan Automobile Middle East and Africa Business Unit, the timing and concept behind DEEPAL are intentional. As he puts it, “DEEPAL was created to meet a very specific global shift happening in mobility. Around the world, particularly in the Middle East, customers are looking for vehicles that combine premium experience, intelligent technology, long-range capability, and sustainability without sacrificing the emotional connection people have with powerful, well-designed cars.”

That balance between intelligence and emotion — a software-defined platform wrapped in something aspirational — is where DEEPAL sees its opening.

Tom believes the timing is ideal. “The Middle East, especially the UAE, is now at the perfect moment: infrastructure is ready, consumers are tech-driven, and governments are encouraging clean mobility.”

The brand’s swift rise with the S05 and S07 in the Gulf shows that buyer appetite is real. The G318 simply aims to expand that momentum.

Tailored for regional realities

The Middle East’s driving culture is unlike any other. Large, powerful SUVs remain deeply entrenched in the region’s automotive identity — yet efficiency, technology and refinement have become increasingly important buying factors.

Tom sees the G318 as a natural fit. “The Middle East has a very unique driving culture. Drivers want vehicles that are powerful, confident, and capable of adventure but also efficient, modern and technologically advanced. The G318 was designed precisely for this balance.”

In essence, it is built to sit comfortably between traditional hardcore off-roaders and next-generation electrified crossovers, a middle ground increasingly relevant as the region transitions toward smarter mobility.

Will go anywhere hold up here?

The G318 enters a market that takes capability seriously. Here, a tagline like Ready to Go Anywhere isn’t a marketing flourish; it’s a challenge.

When asked whether he is confident Middle East customers accustomed to highly capable off-road vehicles will find the G318 convincing, Tom says the vehicle was designed precisely for markets where off-road expectations are high. “The G318’s capabilities were developed with two priorities in mind: genuine utility and smart energy performance.”

The combination of its super hybrid drivetrain, multi-terrain modes, and region-tested systems is engineered to offer capability without compromising efficiency. “It is designed to give drivers a vehicle that can comfortably transition from city streets to desert trails without hesitation,” he says, adding that the G318 “gives them confidence and freedom, not limitations”.

The specs back up that claim: a notable wading depth, carefully engineered off-road geometry, and a range-extended super hybrid system designed to deliver both torque and travel distance across varied terrain. But Tom’s emphasis remains on conceptual intent, a super hybrid SUV meant to enable exploration, capable of everyday versatility and weekend adventure.

Engineered for Gulf conditions, not adapted to them

A recurring challenge for electrified vehicles in the GCC is environmental reality: extreme heat, long-distance commuting, and expectations of real off-road ability. Tom addresses this directly: “This is an important point, and it’s why our engineering teams invested heavily in regional validation before introducing the G318 here.”

He highlights three pillars: thermal resilience, long-distance versatility and real off-road tuning. “The G318 uses a next-generation battery and e-drive system supported by enhanced thermal management to handle GCC temperatures, even during fast charging or extended highway driving.

“For long-distance travel, the hybrid system delivers excellent total range, making it ideal for intercity routes where charging availability can vary.

“And for off-road use, the chassis, suspension, and traction systems were tuned to provide the stability, clearance, and torque response necessary for gravel, sand, and mixed terrain.

This leads to perhaps his most definitive assertion: “The G318 wasn’t just adapted for the Middle East — it was engineered with this region in mind.” For a brand building credibility in the new-energy space, that distinction matters.

Understanding the Gulf’s new-energy buyer

Changan’s rapid growth in Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Bahrain has provided the brand with a sharp read on what Gulf customers want.

Tom says their expectations differ meaningfully from other global markets. “Middle East consumers are very clear in their expectations: they want new-energy vehicles that are powerful, intelligent, capable and efficient. They expect premium cabins, intuitive digital interfaces, fast charging, long-range confidence, and strong after-sales support.”

Crucially, he adds that Gulf buyers are not motivated primarily by price or basic efficiency. “In the Gulf, customers want smart-energy vehicles that feel advanced and aspirational.” DEEPAL’s strategy, he says, is shaped directly by this feedback.

DEEPAL’s role in the region’s future mobility shift

Tom sees DEEPAL playing a central role in the GCC’s shift toward cleaner, more intelligent mobility ecosystems. “DEEPAL’s role is to make the transition to intelligent mobility practical, desirable and accessible. The G318 is at the centre of that mission.”

Success, however, isn’t just about volumes. “It’s measured by how seamlessly customers integrate DEEPAL vehicles into their daily lives and how confident they feel in our service, technology, and long-term support.”

As the brand expands its MEA footprint and strengthens dealer networks, such as the partnership with Al Tayer Motors in the UAE, the G318 becomes a cornerstone product, aimed not just at early adopters but at mainstream SUV buyers seeking capability without the compromise typically associated with electrified platforms.

And Tom is clear about the brand’s long-term ambition: “When we achieve that, DEEPAL will help shape the next chapter of sustainable mobility in the region.”
