Harrington to tee it up at The 2024 Senior Open
Irishman returns to the scene of his maiden Major triumph in 2007
Three-time Major Champion Pádraig Harrington will return to the site of his maiden Open Championship victory when he tees it up at Carnoustie Golf Links in The Senior Open Presented by Rolex from July 25-28, 2024.
The Irishman, who won back-to-back Claret Jugs in 2007 and 2008, will be looking to avenge his near-miss at Royal Porthcawl last year – where he lost in a play-off to eventual winner Alex Čejka – as Europe’s only Senior Major Championship returns to Carnoustie for a third time later this year.
The 2007 Open provided great drama for the golfing public as Harrington twice found the Barry Burn at the 72nd hole before a superb pitch to five feet saved a double bogey, going on to triumph in a four-hole play-off against Sergio Garcia.
The three-time major and 15-time DP World Tour winner, who has also won seven times on the over-50s circuit, including the 2022 US Senior Open, is excited to return to Carnoustie, a venue where he has not only tasted success on the Major stage, but also on the DP World Tour as a two-time winner of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.
“Carnoustie is a highly respected Championship golf course and I am pleased that we will get the chance to play The Senior Open there this year,” he said.
“It holds a special place in my heart as the venue where I won my first Major, but I also love going back each year as part of the Dunhill. The course has the reputation of being one of the toughest courses on the Open Champion rota and I would certainly agree with that.
“It is a great strategic test of golf, and I’m really looking forward to playing it under major championship course set-up conditions again this year.”
Germany’s Čejka defeated Harrington in a play-off to win last year’s Senior Open Presented by Rolex as he landed his third Senior Major Championship on a dramatic final day at Royal Porthcawl.
The four-time DP World Tour winner got the job done at the second extra hole, making a two-putt birdie at the par-five 18th in punishing conditions, and Harrington will this year go in search of becoming only the fifth man to win both The Open and The Senior Open.
This will be the third time the Championship has visited Carnoustie, with 12-time Senior Major winner Bernhard Langer winning in 2010, before Paul Broadhurst’s triumph in 2016.
