Full Monty as Scowsill wins Emirates Amateur Open in Dubai to book ticket to DP World Tour in RAK
Monty Scowsill shot a brilliant 68 over the Majlis Course on Saturday to win the 2022 Emirates Amateur Open at Emirates Golf Club.
The English 25-year-old, who plays out of Woodbridge Golf Club in England, claimed the title over two days in a play-off after his combined total over the Faldo and Majlis courses left him locked with Max Burrow, club captain at Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club, on two-over at the end of the 34 hole event.
After two halved sudden-death play-off holes, both on the 18th hole, Scowsill birdied the par five third attempt at the 18th to take the title.
In addition to the trophy, Scowsill bagged a spot at the DP World Tour’s Ras Al Khaimah Championship to be held at Al Hamra Golf Club in February, right after the Dubai Desert Classic.
“I came out to Dubai just for a couple of weeks for some pre-season practice at The Els Club,” Scowsill said. “I found out about the Dubai Creek Men’s Amateur Open and the Emirates Amateur Open while I was here from friends and I entered both immediately and my entries were accepted. To win the Emirates Amateur Open at Emirates Golf Club, having not played either golf course before, is something I am very proud of. I have watched the Majlis Course on TV for the Dubai Desert Classic for so many years so it felt familiar and I was comfortable on the golf course.
“Instead of going home to England at the end of the month, it looks like I am now staying out here and I am definitely playing in the Ras Al Khaimah DP World Tour event in the first week of February. I am so excited with this huge opportunity, it is a great start for me to 2022. I am thankful to everyone at The Els Club and Emirates Golf Club for their hospitality and there is no better place to practice than Dubai. From what I have seen.”
First-round leader James Nash had to settle for tied-fourth, while local hero Toby Bishop had a best of the day 64 climbing to solo third after a first round of 76.
The winner of the net division was Lorenzo Lironi with 138, beating Miki Mirza and 13-year-old Murray Fleetwood, son of DP World Tour star Tommy, on a card countback, with dad attending the prize presentation.
This tournament is part of the 2021-2022 Men’s Emirates Golf Federation (EGF) Order of Merit.
Barney Coleman, Club Manager of Emirates Golf Club, said: “We have had a great two days of golf with an exciting finish. The weather for today’s final round was windy, calm and also wet at times, especially for the play-off, perhaps three seasons all in just a few hours. Congratulations to Monty and we look forward to watching his progress in Ras Al Khaimah in a couple of weeks’ time.”
