Dubai: Can a pet jeopardise a wedding? It did in India. A woman in India called off her marriage after her fiance’s mother refused to allow her to bring the dog to their home, reports said.
Did the dog cause the breakup of the seven-year relationship? Did the girl love the dog more than the boy? No, it merely reflected the state of their relationship.
Sharing her story on social media X, Priyanka said while they were planning the wedding, the boyfriend’s attitude changed: he stopped fighting for her and their relationship when disagreements arose. The couple had no disagreements, but his mother’s intervention pained her.
Both families had agreed to the marriage, but the boy’s mother rejected Priyanka’s request to bring the dog with her after the wedding. Explaining the request, Priyanka said her ailing mother could not care for the dog, so she planned to take the pet to her boyfriend’s house after marriage.
The objection of her boyfriend’s mother stemmed from the fact that they already had a dog and hence could not accommodate another pet.
Priyanka said the dog is like her child, and she can’t leave him behind. But her boyfriend’s mother refused to relent. Following the emotional turmoil and her boyfriend’s lack of support, Priyanka decided to end the relationship.

While some people backed Priyanka, saying that they understand the bond between pet parents and animals, others criticised her decision as immature and dramatic. One even said the story was untrue, and accused her of cooking up the story.
One commenter slammed the boyfriend for prioritising his family’s convenience over Priyanka’s attachment to her dog. Another social media user said relationships require sacrifices and adjustments from both sides.
