McGlinchey’s Qatar connection stands out at International Series
While LIV Golf stars Patrick Reed and Anthony Kim have made their debuts at Doha Golf Club for the International Series Qatar, one young player in the field is far more familiar with the venue.
Scottish amateur Dominic McGlinchey, who earned an invite from the Qatar Golf Association, spent four years living in Qatar. His father, Gary, served as General Manager of Doha Golf Club for eight years before stepping down last August.
Although Dominic ultimately missed the cut after posting two rounds of 73 to finish two over par, the week was an unforgettable one.
With his father on the bag, the duo shared the course with Major champions, Ryder Cup stars and other elite players.
“It's been an awesome experience this week,” said McGlinchey, who won the 2022 UAE World Junior Golf Championship by 13 shots aged just 15.
“To play with the pros on the Asian Tour and to play under that pressure, I think it's awesome for my game and development and I think regardless of where I finish, I think I proved to myself I can compete with these guys out here.”
Despite his young age, McGlinchey is no stranger to competing in elite professional events. Earlier this year, The Renaissance Club member, earned one of three amateur spots available in the DP World Tour’s Commercial Bank Qatar Masters.
With experience on both golf’s global circuit and the Asian Tour already under his belt, McGlinchey feels he is on the right path.
“I hope to make it as a pro in a couple of years’ time, that's the goal,” he said.
“I've always wanted to play on tour, just like these guys and we'll see what happens in a few years. I managed to have a chat with Charl Schwartzel the other day and I've played with lots of guys on the European Tour, Stevie Gallagher, Ewan Ferguson a lot of the Scottish guys. Yeah, you always ask them a few things and learn a bit every day.”
The McGlinchey duo brought plenty of course knowledge to the table, even though the family now splits their time between Australia and Scotland.
McGlinchey junior said: “It's comforting, I guess because he knows my game inside out. We obviously know each other really well and he did a good job helping me. We did all the putts together, reading greens and my putting has been reasonable for these two days, it's been good having him on the bag.
With just one round to go in Doha, LIV Golf’s Peter Uihlein leads the way on 12-under-par, with Zachary Bauchou just one stroke behind.
Morocco’s Adam Bresnu, who claimed individual and team gold at last week’s Pan Arab Championship in the UAE, sits in a share of 33rd on two-under-par.
