Dubai resident Thorbjørn Olesen heading to Masters Tournament
Ras Al Khaimah Championship winner Thorbjørn Olesen will be heading to the Masters Tournament in April after tournament organisers sent him a special invitation to compete in the 88th edition.
The first Major Championship of the year has a long-standing tradition of inviting leading international players who are not otherwise exempt into the event, with Dubai resident Olesen being joined by Japanese star Ryo Hisatsune and LIV golfer Joaquin Niemann.
“Today’s announcement represents the Tournament’s continued commitment towards developing interest in the game of golf across the world,” said Fred Ridley, Chairman of Augusta National Golf Club and the Masters Tournament.
“We look forward to welcoming each player to Augusta National this spring.”
It will be Olesen’s fourth start at Augusta National and first since 2019. The 34-year-old made the cut in each of his three previous appearances, including a T-6 in his tournament debut in 2013.
Just last month, Olesen stormed to his eighth DP World Tour title in convincing fashion, firing a closing 67 to win the third edition of the Ras Al Khaimah Championship at Al Hamra Golf Club.
Olesen's total of 261 - which included a course-record equalling 62 in the second round - was the lowest of the season, with his score to par also the lowest of the season by seven strokes.
His six-shot winning margin was also the biggest of the season so far and Olesen has now won in three consecutive seasons and seven times out of eight when holding the 54-hole lead.
Hisatsune will be making his debut at the tournament after an impressive year saw him become the first Japanese player to be voted Rookie of the Year on the DP World Tour, while Niemann returns to the prestigious tournament for a fifth time, having first made his debut as an amateur in 2018.
