Dubai: North London Collegiate School (NLCS) Dubai has enhanced its sailing programme, a vital component of its Extra-Curricular Activities (ECA) curriculum. The updated programme integrates Royal Yachting Association (RYA) qualifications with hands-on sailing experiences, enabling students to develop technical expertise while building teamwork and resilience.

As the only school in the Middle East authorised to offer RYA-accredited training, NLCS Dubai provides students the opportunity to earn internationally recognised certifications. Beyond skill-building, the programme fosters collaboration and strengthens ties across the school community, involving parents and staff.

“Sailing offers a unique way for students to grow in confidence and develop important life skills,” said Nikki Woodroffe, Director of ECAs. “It also provides an avenue for families and staff to engage with the school’s activities, fostering relationships across the community.”

Students from various year groups worked in teams, representing their houses and promoting inter-age collaboration. Student Noah Mansour remarked, “Crossing the finish line with my teammates was an unforgettable experience. It taught me the value of working together under pressure.”

The programme also promotes community engagement through events like the Students, Teachers, and Parents Regatta, which create opportunities for meaningful connections among families, staff, and students. These initiatives highlight the school’s commitment to building a supportive community.

Jonathan Locke, Principal of NLCS Dubai, observed, “The regatta extends the values of our House system by creating a space where families, teachers, and students come together. Activities like these build connections that are central to our school’s ethos.”

Participants found the events enriching. Edwina Viel, a parent participant, shared, “It was rewarding to see how much the children had learned and to take part in an activity that brought everyone together.”

The programme continues to uphold a legacy of excellence by equipping students with the skills they need to excel academically and personally. Combining technical training with character development, it prepares students to navigate future challenges with confidence.
