Ferrari launches its first SUV
It was just a matter of time before Ferrari launched its first-ever SUV. The Ferrari Purosangue was unveiled at Teatro del Silenzio, Lajatico, on 13th September 2022. It is the brand's first four-door, four-seater SUV competing against the Lamborghini Urus Performante, the Aston Martin DBX and the Bentley Bentayga Speed. Several specifications and details regarding the SUV have been released after its launch. Discover the Ferrari Purosangue with us now.
What do we know about the Ferrari Purosangue?
In the 75-year-long history of Ferrari, the prancing horse performance-car manufacturer finally decided to give its customers what they wanted. For years, the international automotive fraternity anticipated the launch of a Ferrari SUV.
Lamborghini, Bentley and Aston Martin were early adopters of the SUV trend. But Ferrari believed in the idea of 'better late than never.' The engineers at Maranello, the home of Ferrari, let their ideas and vision brew over time to create the ultimate performance SUV.
The last time Ferrari launched a 2+2 seater vehicle was when they gave us the Ferrari FF. It was a supercar that combined practicality and performance. Perhaps, it was time for the brand to take things a step further, with the Purosangue.
Take a tour of its cabin
When Ferrari launches a new vehicle, the primary focus is always on its performance capabilities. But with Purosangue, things are slightly different. The entire focus, post its launch, has been around its seating capacity and practical agendas.
Right off the bat, you will notice that the Purosangue has four dedicated bucket seats. The design of the interior is inspired by the Ferrari SF90 Stradale but with added elegance and space. The Y-shaped dashboard greets passengers on the front with a 10.2-inch display on the passenger side and a fully-digital gauge cluster.
The center section of the dashboard features air-conditioning and climate control toggles. Moving down to the center console tunnel, the Purosangue has drive-mode selectors and other suspension setting-related buttons.
Highlights of the interior include:
• Four-seats [2+2 setup]
• Sustainable interior materials; New Alcantara material, recycled polyester, recycled fishing nets
• Carbon-Fiber components
• No analog cluster, a fully-digital setup
• 3D High-End Surround System by Burmester
• Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity
What's also worth mentioning is that you step into this sporty, luxurious cabin through a unique door setup, referred to as 'Suicide Doors.' These doors are commonly found on Rolls-Royce vehicles like the Cullinan and the Ghost.
What's under the bonnet
The Ferrari Purosangue is powered by the brand's most iconic engine configuration, a 6.5-Liter naturally-aspirated V12. It produces a total power output of 715 horsepower at 7750 rpm.
Considering the tight emission norms in Europe, Ferrari decided to make its engines more efficient and emission-friendly. They were able to achieve the same by implementing F1-inspired engine calibration concepts.
Transmission and suspension
Ferrari continues to deliver some of the industry's best transmission and gearbox setups. The Purosangue has an 8-speed F1 DCT gearbox with quick and concise shifts.
It uses an oil-bath dual clutch mechanism supported by a dry sump and a compact clutch-assembly. Overall, the weight of the entire unit has been reduced, thus adding to the efficiency of the vehicle.
Ferrari has equipped the Purosangue with the brand's first-ever active suspension system. It also features a 6-way Chassis Dynamic sensor, enabling seamless driving and handling.
Performance and handling
Ferrari's are pioneers in racing technology when it comes to performance. Powered by naturally-aspirated V12, the Purosangue can reach a top speed of 310 km/h. The 0-100 km/h time of the Purosangue is claimed to be 3.3 seconds. Other performance specifications that have been officially released are:
• 10.6 seconds from 0 to 200 km/h
• Braking distance from 200 to 0 km/h is 129 meters
• Braking time from 100 to 0 km/h is 32.8 seconds
Ferrari gave handling the utmost priority during the development process. As the first SUV produced by the brand, Ferrari wanted to showcase their handling capabilities and vision for the future. Thus, the vehicle features modern, state-of-the-art suspension technology like:
• F1-Trac system
• SSC 8.0: 4RM-S EVO
• ECS unit
• ABS 'EVO' with 2.0 Grip Estimation
• Active Suspension System
