Manama: A Saudi woman hid for days in the Grand Mosque in Makkah to escape from her husband of one month, according to media reports.
"The woman, in her 20s, stayed inside the mosque and did not leave it to avoid being with her husband," Saudi daily Al Watan has reported.
The disgruntled husband in his 60s, who has children from another marriage, had launched the search for the wife after he alerted the local police about her disappearance.
However, the woman refused to go back with the husband and after her brothers who had reportedly forced her to marry him refused to take her back from the police, she was transferred to a special institution in Makkah. A court will decide later on her fate.
The Grand Mosque in Makkah, known in Arabic as Al Masjid Al Haram, is Islam's holiest place and the world's largest mosque.
It houses the Kaaba, the place towards which Muslims worldwide turn while offering prayers, and its doors are never shut down.
