The recent comments by two senior European politicians on the veil is a blow to inter-religious tolerance as much as an open invitation to inciting principles of alienation and isolation rather than integration of Muslim populations in western societies. British Prime Minister Tony Blair and Italy's Romano Prodi said that wearing of the "full veil" is creating a problem in their nations as it is a "mark of separation".

Such comments would ensure the sowing of deep divisions and sentiments of hatred against Muslim communities. On what basis have the two leaders issued a generalisation? Why has the subject turned into a hot issue of debate only now? Has the veil ever been a source of security threat or concern before?

"What is happening, especially in the last few months, has been a barrage of demonisation of the Muslim community to such an extent that the community is now scared," said Mohammad Abdul Bari, a leader of the Muslim Council of Britain.

Using religion for political gain is unwarranted. But before embarking on the attack, there should be a proper understanding about the veil, as "full veils" as opposed to "half" do not exist.
