Everyone knows about the ‘biggest’ or the ‘oldest’ places around the world – but what about those that are second-biggest or second-oldest?

Click start to play today’s Crossword, which is all about second cities!

Just because they are number two in the order of things doesn’t mean they are any less interesting.

For instance, where would you expect the largest French-speaking city in the world to be (outside of France)? If you guessed Canada or Lebanon, that’s incorrect. Today’s puzzle highlights a city in Africa that is home to the largest number of urban Francophones or French speakers in the world (9-Across). In fact, French is the language of its government, education, media and public services. Formerly called Leopoldville, this city is considered to be one of the world’s fastest growing megacities, with a population that’s close to 15 million.

Another clue asks you to guess the second most populous city in Brazil (1-Across). While it may rate second in terms of population size, it is consistently one of the most visited places in the southern hemisphere. The city is known for its beautiful beaches, football obsession, samba, and the Carnival, where two million people flood the streets in celebration every day for a week. Have you guessed it yet?

Lastly, a clue in today’s puzzle refers to English author Charles Dickens’ acclaimed novel, A Tale of Two Cities (15-Across). One of the cities in his book is London, and you will have to guess the name of the other – a land that overflows with culture, art and history, and is nicknamed the City of Light.
