India at Getex

India is now the world’s second largest higher education hub, with future technologies being at the centre of education delivery and a focus on skills development in key tech-driven areas such as AI, machine learning, data science, cyber security, sustainability, and science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

Measures to boost internationalisation

According to data published by the All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) conducted by the India Ministry of Education, the number of students enrolled in higher education institutions across India crossed 40 million for the first time in the 2020-2021 academic year. Despite having a hefty representation of Indian origin students, Indian universities are increasingly accelerating their efforts to attract a more globally diverse student population. Top education experts are partnering with world leaders to offer internationally affiliated programs, set up branch campuses, and improve education standards for both local and expat students with the use of the latest technology.

As a result, the number of foreign students making their way to India for higher studies has surged by nearly 42 per cent in less than a decade, with the country being a hotspot for students from China, Nepal, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Iran, Bhutan and other countries in close proximity.

Government taking proactive steps to enhance education footprint

Recently, the government of India has put in place a number of initiatives to boost the country’s higher education industry, such as developing and marketing specialised programmes and short-term training courses, specifically in Technology related areas. It has also introduced financial incentives such as waivers, scholarships and fellowships to attract more inbound students who would like to pursue Masters degrees and other higher education qualifications in India.

Demand for education tourism is also on an incline for general learners who are looking for quality yet affordable education while at the same time having exposure to new experiences and the diverse South-Asian cultures that India offers.

Technology and innovation, a key focus in Indian higher education

Global research and financial advisory firm, KPMG, has released data that reveals that the Indian Edtech market size is expected to reach $30 billion by 2031 and the country has already become the second largest market for E-learning after the US. In 2019-2020, out of the total foreign students in India, 9,503 were enrolled in Bachelor of Technology programmes, which are perceived to be of high quality and globally recognised. Education technology adoption such as the use of AI and Machine Learning, is also rapidly transforming the higher education landscape in India.

With high standards of EdTech built into India’s universities, administrators are able to streamline the teaching process, plan curricula better, and offer more innovative and personalized teaching experiences to students.
