There is no doubt about it that the luxury SUV market is heating up as more and more carmakers enter the segment. Several have already made their mark such as Bentley and Rolls-Royce with the Bentayga and Cullinan respectively and more are joining in. As for the performance SUV class, it too is growing, fast, with a trend among sportscar brands to diversify their portfolio. The Lamborghini Urus is thrilling enthusiasts but it doesn’t have the segment all to itself what with the Maserati Levante, BMW X7 and Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 to name but a few planting grins on families while Ferrari is dragging its heels for now but it will most likely offer a high-riding model too - but the focus recently has been on Aston Martin as the British brand revealed the all-new DBX. It may be tailored to offer more luxury than the performance-tuned Urus, but they fall in the same group so let’s compare the two spec for spec…

Exterior:

The DBX looks smooth and sophisticated, like you would expect any model built by Aston Martin (it looks like a jacked-up Vantage at first glance and that’s not a bad thing - the taillights are clearly borrowed from it) and a typical Aston grille gives it its identity.

The fastback look of DBX cleverly positions the visual mass of the car over the rear wheels, just as you see in Aston Martin's sports cars. Image Credit: Supplied

The Urus looks brash in comparison and has a far more aggressive and edgy design. In fact, the Italian looks like it is itching for a fight while the Brit has a more laid back and relaxed demeanor. Is it for a different kind of customer? Absolutely.

Interior:

Aston Martin has ensured that the DBX’s cabin is classy and sophisticated and a very pleasant place to be. Wrapped in leather, it has a new generation touchscreen infotainment system and a digital instrument cluster. With 632 litres of boot space and 40:20:40 split folding rear seats it possesses all the flexible load capacity expected of an SUV with class-leading interior space.

The Urus is as much a luxury SUV as the most powerful, with a super sports car dynamism to be enjoyed by both driver and passengers. Providing an extremely comfortable five-seat configuration, the ability to fold and move the rear seat offers maximum versatility and increased luggage capacity for daily use. The rear bench seat can be lowered to substantially extend the trunk space from 616 liters.

Verdict:

Sure, we are comparing two very different SUVs here but they’re playing in the same field. The Urus is aggressively styled and packed with aggressive performance too while the DBX is classier and more sophisticated – but also has bags of power.
