Man, 85, kills wife for ‘social media jealousy’

Istanbul: An 85-year-old man killed his 76-year-old wife and attempted to commit suicide in Istanbul after an argument over his social media activity that made her “jealous”.

The couple, Bilal and Esma who had been married for 50 years, lived in Germany, and went to Turkey last week for a holiday in Istanbul, Turkish daily Hurriyet reported.

Relatives, alarmed that the couple did not answer their phone calls, went to their house in the Yeniköy neighbourhood and found them covered in blood.

Esma, who was stabbed in the heart, died in hospital, while Bilal was saved.

He later told to the police that he killed his wife as she was jealous and suspicious over his activities on social media.

“She thought that I was in contact with someone on social media. We quarrelled. She told me to leave the house because she did not trust me anymore. It was our last fight,” he reportedly told the police.
