Yemen pledges support for new UN envoy
Swedish diplomat Hans Grundberg appointed as the 4th UN emissary
Cairo: The Yemeni government has welcomed the UN decision to appoint Swedish diplomat Hans Grundberg as a new peace envoy for the war-wracked country succeeding Martin Griffiths.
On Friday, UN chief Antonio Guterres appointed Grundberg as the fourth envoy for Yemen which has been devastated by war for nearly seven years.
The Yemeni government said that the government will offer “all support” for the new envoy with the aim of resuming a long-stalled peace process and reaching a comprehensive political solution.
“This will end the coup and war ignited by Al Houthi militias and ease suffering of the Yemeni people who face the worst humanitarian crisis,” the ministry added in a statement, according to the Yemeni news agency Saba.
The Iran-aligned Al Houthis plunged Yemen into a devastating war in late 2014 when they unseated the internationally recognised government and seized parts of the country, including the capital Sana’a.
In recent months, there have been stepped-up international efforts to end the war in Yemen amid rebel intransigence.
