Girl threatens to bomb school after barred from exam

Would-be bomber got angry after she was denied taking exam for failing to pay school fees

Cairo: A schoolgirl in war-wracked Yemen threatened to bomb her school after she was barred from sitting for the exam for failing to pay the fees, Saudi television Al Arabiya has reported.

The student, in the second year of secondary education, reappeared Monday at the school in Yemen’s central province of Ibb carrying a hand grenade and threatening to hurl it inside, the television said, citing local sources and witnesses.

The threat triggered panic among other students at the girls’ school, according to the witnesses.

Footage showed panic-stricken girls at the school over the alleged bombing threat. There was no immediate comment from authorities on the incident.

Yemen’s conflict erupted after Iran-allied Al Houthi militia unseated the internationally recognised government of President Abd Rabbo Mansour Hadi and overran parts of the country, including the capital Sana’a in late 2014.

In 2015, an Arab alliance co-led by the UAE and Saudi Arabia, intervened in Yemen in response to a request from the Hadi government after Al Houthis advanced on the southern city of Aden, the country’s provisional capital.

The feud has pushed the impoverished country to the verge of famine amid a proliferation of weaponry.
