Abu Dhabi: The victim in a brutal killing of a person while sitting in a restaurant in Ecuador featured in a social media video was not a Saudi colonel.

Social media users circulated the clip, which was taken from a surveillance camera, in which the perpetrators stormed the restaurant, brutally shot the victim at close range, then ran away.

The clip claimed that the man who was killed on the spot was a Saudi colonel.

Boom Live, an Indian fact-checking organisation, investigated the truth of the clip and found the person who was shot was a former Ecuadorian policeman, who was assassinated in January. The man had a criminal record.

Boom Live reported that the clip of the brutal incident had been used repeatedly on the internet in other misleading allegations.
