Cairo: Saudi authorities have warned that carelessness towards pets is punishable by a fine of up to 50,000 riyals.

“Negligence of animals is represented by their owners’ lack of attention, malnutrition [of the pets[ or leaving them without adequate food or food or failing to give them enough rest,” the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture said on its Twitter.

Those “cruel” practices violate regulations related to care for animals and are liable for a fine of up to SR50,000, it added.

The ministry urged due attention to animals during a curfew currently in force in the country to limit the spread of the novel coronavirus.

“Don’t forget them during the curfew. Make sure you provide food and water for animals when you are away," it said, addressing pet owners.
