UN General Assembly: World needs countries like Oman

Muscat: The President of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Volkan Bozkir praised Oman’s foreign policy, and said that its political ideals are based on mutual-respect. He said Oman is guided by the principles of the United Nations Charter and international law, which has earned it international respect.

In a meeting with Dr. Mohammed bin Awad Al Hassan, the Sultanate’s permanent representative to the UN, in New York, Bozkir praised the leadership of Said Haitham bin Tariq. Drawing attention to the wise leadership of Sultan Haitham, he noted that Oman’s governance is based on an ancient cultural heritage. Dr Mohammed was joined in the meeting by his delegation members, apart from the ambassadors of the Gulf Cooperation Council countries as well as other Arab ambassadors.

Bozkir also noted that the world needs countries like Oman, which seeks to bridge the rift between countries, supports the resolution of disputes by peaceful means, and encourages confidence building between countries and peoples.

Bozkir, a Turk, was elected as President of the 75th General Assembly in June this year, which runs from September 2020 to September 2021.

Earlier during the 75th session of the UNGA, on September 29, Sayyid Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi, Oman’s Foreign Minister, addressed the UNGA and said through a statement that Oman has been an active participant in international and regional fora that produced the Sustainable Development Goals 2030. “The Sultanate of Oman has sought to translate its commitments into key components of the ninth five-year development plan and Oman Vision 2020 to 2040. Oman intends to continue to work to achieve the economic, social and environmental dimensions of Sustainable Development Goals within the specified time frame.”
