Dubai: Two Kuwaiti children died and three others were injured after they got stuck in an elevator inside their home, which caught fire, Al Seyassah newspaper reported.

According to a security source, police officers and firefighting teams from Umm Al Hayman and Mina Abdullah fire stations rushed to the scene after receiving reports about the raging house fire.

They managed to rescue five children and their mother. They were all rushed to the hospital. Two children who got stuck in the elevator died as the fire devoured the house from the inside. Kuwait Police launched immediate investigation into the incident to determine the circumstances that could have led to the start of the fire.

Similar incidents have taken place in Kuwait over the past year. In March 2020, eight children died in a massive fire that gutted a family house. Five others were rescued.

The exact cause of the fire was not clear. However, an initial inspection showed that the blaze could have been an act of arson, the Kuwaiti daily Al Qabas reported back then.

Two domestic workers, who had escaped from the house at the time of the fire, were suspected of being behind the incident, the paper quoted security sources as saying. One housemaid, who is an Ethiopian, was arrested, while the second is still on the run.
