Dubai: A Kuwaiti hospital has conducted the first caesarean operation on a woman infected with coronavirus in Kuwait, Al Qabas newspaper reported on Saturday.

On her twitter page, obstetrician and gynecologist Dr Maryam Al Mansoori confirmed the news saying: “The first caesarean operation was performed on a coronavirus patient on the ECMO. May God bless your efforts and help you carry on with confidence, Dr Hanan Al Khatlan and Dr Alia Tahu.”

ECMO stands for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. It is similar to the heart-lung bypass machine used in open heart surgery. It pumps and oxygenates a patient’s blood outside the body, allowing the heart and lungs to rest.

Also known as extracorporeal life support, ECMO is an extracorporeal technique providing prolonged cardiac and respiratory support for persons whose heart and lungs are unable to provide an adequate amount of gas exchange or perfusion to sustain life.
