Bahrain court upholds jail sentences against police assailants
The convicts were charged with 2017 attack, causing permanent injury to policeman
Cairo: Bahrain’s top appeals court has confirmed jailing two people for seven years in prison each after they were convicted of attacking a police patrol and inflicting a permanent injury on a policeman more than three years ago, media reported Friday.
The case is related to a 2017 attack in Nuwaidrat in January 2017 when the two convicts had participated with others in attacking a police force stationed at the entrance of the area, using Molotov cocktails.
After their arrest, the duo admitted to involvement in the attack that caused burns to three policemen on duty.
A medical report proved that one of the three police personnel – a lance corporal – sustained burns in the arms and the face, resulting in skin deformities, Bahraini newspaper Akhbar Al Khaleej reported.
The two defendants were also charged with participating in an illegal gathering in a public place with the aim of disrupting public security, and used petrol bombs, thus putting lives of others in peril.
A lower court had sentenced the two to 10 years in prison each. Later, the ruling was reduced to seven years in jail on appeal. The top court confirmed the sentencing, making it irreversible.
