Cairo: Customs officers at Bahrain’s International Airport foiled an attempt by an Asian man to smuggle into the country drugs stashed in his bowels, according to a local newspaper.

The smuggler raised officers’ suspicions at the airport after he looked confused and appeared unable to walk, Al Khaleej newspaper reported.

When frisked, the suspect had nothing in possession. An X-ray later showed there were strange objects believed to be contraband.

He was referred to a hospital where he initially refused to take medication and attempted to commit suicide. Later, he said he had hidden drugs in capsules and swallowed them allegedly for personal use.

A medical report said the suspect had discharged 77 capsules from his body. He has been referred to trial on charges of smuggling, dealing in and taking drugs.
