Woman scalds prospective daughter-in-law a day before wedding in Philippines
Filipina did not approve of son’s marriage to the victim
Manila: A woman poured boiling water on her son’s prospective bride in southern Philippines’ Iligan City to express her disapproval to the union.
A report reaching Manila by the Bombo Radyo Cagayan de Oro said the victim, Ailenne Tejada, was supposed to have been married last August 28, but on the eve of the wedding day, the groom’s mother, Esperanza Bulahan Ruiz, intentionally splashed boiling water on the prospective bride, badly scalding her skin.
A photo of Tejada shown in the radio station’s website showed third degree burns on both the victim’s arms.
Based on investigations by the Iligan City police, Ruiz expressed strong disapproval to her son’s wedding to Tejada.
Despite the incident, the wedding took place on September 14.
It is not yet known if the victim would be pressing formal charges against her mother-in-law, but the family of Tejada has been demanding justice for her.
Philippine tradition does not require the permission or approval of parents of the groom and bride as long as they are of legal age for marriage. However, in weddings officiated by the Catholic Church, the people attending the ceremony are asked, during the rites, if there is anyone who does not approve of the union.
