Lightning alert over Ninoy Aquino International Airport
MANILA, Philippines: Heavy to intense rainshowers with lightning and strong winds led to the suspension of flight and ground operations at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (Naia) on Wednesday afternoon.
The Manila International Airport Authority (Miaa) issued an advisory after it raised the red lightning alert at 2:26 pm (10.26 UAE time), following thunderstorm advisory from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa), which raised a red lightning alert warning.
"All are advised to take precautionar measures against the impacts associated with the hazards which include flash floods and landslides," Pagasa stated in a 2.34pm advisory.
Affected areas include Metro Manila, Tarlac, Nueva Ecija, Zambales, Pampanga, Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon and Bataan.
“The alert will be lifted as soon as Pagasa deems it safe to continue operations,” the authority said in an advisory.
The authority earlier explained that the alert is a safety precaution taken to prevent any untoward incident from happening when flashes of lightning are prevalent in the immediate area and may endanger personnel, passengers, and flight operations.
