Manila: A Filipino overseas worker (OFW) from the Middle East struck life-changing fortune during a vacation in the Philippines, winning the Php37.46 million ($626,248) jackpot of the Super Lotto 6/49 on October 20.

The Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) shared the heartwarming story behind the win. The OFW, who was home for a holiday, decided to purchase a lotto ticket in honor of his father, who had faithfully played the same number combination – 20, 32, 29, 31, 01, 22 – for years.

When his father became too ill to buy tickets himself, the son carried on the tradition.

The win, described as "life-changing" by the lucky OFW, came with a bittersweet sentiment of familial love and legacy. "It was my father’s faith in these numbers that brought this blessing to my family," he shared with PCSO.

Jackpot claim, future plans

The winner claimed the prize, amounting to Php37,462,798 (exclusive of a 20% tax under the TRAIN law), at the PCSO head office in Mandaluyong City.

Post-win, he deferred his return to the Middle East to manage his winnings. Despite the windfall, he expressed plans to properly give notice to his employer overseas, demonstrating his professional commitment.

The OFW’s incredible luck has been a source of inspiration, showing how a family tradition and belief can lead to unexpected windfall.
