Philippines: 10 detainees escape Manila cell, 9 rearrested
Manila: Ten (10) prisoners escaped from a Manila jail on Monday, of whom nine had been rearrested as of Tuesday.
The 10 bolted the Malibay Correctional Center in Pasay City, one of the 16 constituent cities of Metro Manila.
According to the Southern Police District (SPD), the prisoners fled the institution in Barangay No. 152 at around 4:30 am.
“Initial investigation disclosed that three of the prisoners managed to break the iron bar of the main facility then held and mauled the duty jailer and took his service firearm, cash and assorted keys of the jail,” the SPD said in its report.
The initial six had been rearrested on the same day they escaped. The Philippine National Police (PNP) stated that Norman Deyta, Carlo Magno, and Romeo Estopa were nabbed during a manhunt operation on Tuesday.
On Monday, the authorities brought back into custody escapees Christian Salvatierra, Joey Hernandez, Eden Garcia, Tirzo Galit, Joshua Panganiban, and John Michael Cabe.
Meanwhile, a manhunt operation continues for Richard Dela Cruz, who remains at large. It was not immediately clear how the escapees shattered the metal bars in the detention cell.
