Powerful explosion hits armory of the police headquarters, say initial reports
MANILA, Philippines: An blast reportedly hit the police office in the southern city of Davao on Saturday morning, according to Philippine Media.
Initial reports show that that the blast struck the armory of the police headquarters, according to the daily Philippine Star. The blast ripped off part of a ceiling of a dormitory from across the camp.
The Inquirer, another daily, reported that a recovered bomb accidently went off inside the police compound.
Davao City is the hometown of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte.
The recovered bomb went off inside Camp Domingo Leonor, the Davao City Police Office compound along San Pedro Street in Davao, shortly before noon on Saturday.
Police Major Jason Baria, spokesperson of Southern Mindanao Police Regional Office, said the explosion occurred inside the stockroom of the Davao City Police Office’s (DCPO) explosive and ordnance disposal (EOD) unit around 11:30 am.
“Previously recovered explosives stored at the EOD-DCPO stockroom accidentally exploded, producing a loud blast at the SATU (Special Anti-Terrorism Unit) barracks,” Baria was quoted by local media as saying.
He said bomb experts were now conducting an investigation on what caused the bomb to explode.
There were no reports of casualties, Baria said.
