  • Imran Khan tweeted, Pakistan's "beauty is not appreciated by our ruling elite," which is why ECL is such a calamity for them.
  • Why are some of our lawmakers so scared of the ECL? asked Khan

Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan took to Twitter again yesterday, to question why the Exit Control List (ECL) was such a “calamity” to the “ruling elite” in the country.

In a three-part tweet, Khan shared some excerpts from a BBC documentary on the series Planet Earth, showing the Baltoro glacier in the Karakoram mountains of Pakistan and the snow leopards of the region. Khan wrote: “The majestic beauty and diversity of our land are unparalleled.

“Sadly this beauty is not appreciated by our ruling elite which is why ECL is such a calamity for them.”

In the third tweet, he added: “The captivating grandeur of our land is why I would be happy just remaining confined here working for our people.”

Twitter users were quick to retweet Khan. While many discussed the beauty of Pakistan, others tweeted in agreement with Khan, criticising the previous Pakistan leaders.

Tweep @WaseemAnsab posted: “Absolutely .. Leaders like Nawaz and Zardari always think about how to build their assets abroad.”

And, @DrAbdulJalil2 tweeted: “The ruling elite have never been sincere to the cause of this nation. They and their posterity have always plundered the wealth of this nation with impunity. They have relentlessly been fleecing the resources of this country and are in search of greener pastures abroad.”

Tweep @amarmahmoods wrote: “Corrupt mafia was too busy in money laundry schemes. They did not really care about our beautiful country.”

Khan, on Thursday, had also tweeted: “Why are some of our lawmakers so scared of the ECL? Why are they so keen to go abroad? There is so much work to be done by politicians in and for Pakistan — the land they claim to love but some cannot wait to take frequent trips abroad and lawmakers have iqamas or residencies abroad.”

A day earlier, Pakistan’s Supreme Court (SC) in a written order had stated that the names of Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah should be removed from the no-fly list.

In December 2018, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf government had placed names of 172 suspects, including Zardari, his sister Faryal Talpur, and Shah on the ECL following a Joint Investigation Team (JIT) report in an ongoing money laundering probe.

A decision, which prevents them from flying abroad, was taken during a Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Imran Khan on January 10, Dawn News reported.

Pakistan ex-PM Abbasi recently decried the government for frequently putting the names of the opposition Members of Parliament on the ECL

According to Pakistan television channel, Geo Television Network’s news website, on January 16, Pakistan Supreme Court judge Justice Ijazul Ahsan wrote the verdict in which the court had ordered the (JIT) to send all evidence and relevant material to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB). The verdict stated that the JIT will assist NAB in the investigation and submit a report to the court within 15 days.
