West Bengal: 6 people die in bus crash

Bus dashed against a bridge and fell into a canal

Dubai: Six people on Tuesday died in India after a bus fell into a canal in West Bengal’s Hooghly district.

According to news reports from India, 22 people were also reported to be injured in the bus accident.

According to news agency Press Trust of India (PTI), the Superintendent of Police (SP), Sukesh Jain said: “The Kolkata-bound bus dashed against the cement railings of a bridge before breaking it and fell into the Dakatia Khal (a canal) near Gojarmore at around 9am, killing three passengers on the spot.”

News agency Asian News International (ANI) shared spot visuals on Twitter. @ANI posted: “#SpotVisuals: Five people died, 20 injured when a bus fell into a canal in Hooghly district’s Haripal today. #WestBengal”

In a later update, @ANI posted: “Death toll rises to six in Haripal bus accident.”

Jain added: “At least 22 passengers were injured and condition of two persons was critical.” He confirmed that the victims had been taken to the Haripal hospital.

The rescue operation is underway. A team of state disaster management department is at the spot.
