Kolkata: According to a survey conducted by the Pew Research Centre, US President Donald Trump’s approval ratings have reached an all-time high of 56 per cent among Indians. This is perhaps one of the surest signs of the growing familiarity of the American president among the Indian public. The Pew Research Centre is a neutral fact-finding institution that informs the public about prevailing issues and trends that shape global opinion.

Interestingly, Trump had a fairly low approval rating among Indians — just 14 per cent — during the US presidential race in 2016.

An approval rating of 56 per cent is something that will give the White House entourage a fair bit of a tail wind, heading into a 36-hour touch-and-go trip to India.

However, when the respondents were questioned about Trump’s policy of increasing fees and tariffs on Indian exports to the United States, 48 per cent disapproved of the US president’s trade policies. And that’s one area that has been a bone of contention between Washington and New Delhi for some time now as the two sides continue to struggle to hit common ground on a much-anticipated trade pact.
