Patna: The ongoing smartphone addiction has split a newly-wed couple in Bihar when the woman said she could live without her husband but not without her phone.

Lalu Ram, a resident of Mairwa block in Siwan district, married his sweetheart Aarti Devi against all protests from his family only nine months ago.

However, soon after she reached her in-laws’ home, trouble began in the family since she remained busy using her smartphone.

Initially, they ignored the issue but when they found the situation becoming serious, they decided to intervene.

In-laws intervene

Everyone from her in-laws’ family, including her husband, suggested that she use her phone less and help complete domestic work, but she ignored them.

The overall situation took a serious turn on Saturday when the in-laws brought the matter to the notice of the local village court, urging the latter to intervene and bring peace in the family.

Subsequently, both sides were called at the meeting.

After hearing both sides, the village court asked the woman not to keep the smartphone with her.

The court, however, allowed her to talk to her parents over in-laws’ cell phone, but once a week.

'I can leave my husband but not my smartphone'

The suggestion infuriated the woman so much that she left for her parent’s home saying, these conditions are not acceptable to her.

“I can leave my husband but not my smartphone,” she bluntly told the jury at the village court, before departing for her parents’ home.

She said the cell phone was her lone source of entertainment at her in-laws’ home.

“We tried our best to settle the dispute but the woman remained adamant on using the mobile phone,” one of the jury members Sandeep Kanu told the media on Sunday.
