Dubai: He wanted to marry her and couldn’t take ‘no’ for an answer, 24-year-old Midhun brutally set a 17-year-old girl on fire. Both of the victim and the perpetrator died in the shocking incident that took place in Kochi in Indian state of Kerala.

The girl was at her home when the incident took place according to local media reports. The victim's father is also said to have sustained injuries in attempts to save her.

According to the police, Midhun was the victim's relative's neighbour. "They had first met when she had gone to visit her relative. The duo were in a relationship. After he started insisting that they get married, the girl broke it off as she wanted to study," the police said.

When Midhun persisted on his demand to marry her, the family approached the police on October 7.

However, upon the family's request, the police desisted from filing an FIR. The matter was reconciled with Midhun and his family and he assured that he will stop stalking the minor girl.

An argument ensued. Hearing the commotion, the victim rushed outside and Midhun poured petrol on her and set her ablaze.

They were rushed to Ernakulam Medical College, where they were declared dead.
