Dubai: It’s the stuff of nightmares. Dinesh Kumar was shocked on Saturday, when he discovered the decomposing body of his driver’s wife, hidden underneath his bed.

He had attempted to ignore an increasingly foul smell in his rented room in the city of Gurugram in the Indian state of Haryana, since the previous Monday. Unable to bear the smell anymore, he searched for the source and made the horrifying discovery. His driver who is suspected to have committed the murder, is currently missing.

According to a report by Indian daily Hindustan Times, Dinesh who runs a tea business, returned to his room in Gurugram’s Sector 46 on Monday, from a trip to his village in Narnaul.

He put the unpleasant odour down to a lack of ventilation or a decomposing rodent’s body and went about his week. On Saturday at 8.30am, however, he woke up, unable to bear the smell. Searching for the source, he checked the storage box under his bed and made the macabre disocovery. He recovered from his initial shock and called the police.

According to police accounts in the Hindustan Times report, Dinesh’s driver, Rajesh Kumar, allegedly murdered his wife 30-year-old Babita, on January 21, and hid her body in Dinesh’s room using a spare key to his apartment.

Babita’s father told police that Rajesh suspected Babita of having an extramarital affair.

“The woman’s father said that Rajesh often used to fight with his daughter and on one occasion, had broken the SIM card of her phone. The woman was last seen on Monday, when she visited her father, who lives across the street from her,” Jai Bhagwan, inspector at the Sector 50 police station, was quoted in a Hindustan Times report.

Shahid Ahmad, station house officer (SHO) of Sector 50 police station, said that since the body was highly decomposed, the method of murder remained undetermined.

A case was registered against Rajesh under sections 302 (murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at the Sector 50 police station on Saturday.
