India: Woman in Punjab divorces husband to marry daughter's husband's brother

The families disapproved of the act and the couple went to court to get protection

While controversial stories of marriages usually involve youngsters in love convincing their parents, this instance in the Indian state of Punjab involves a mother who married the elder brother of her daughter’s husband. Her daughter’s brother-in-law.

Once her 18-year-old daughter married a 21-year-old man from Gurdaspur in 2019, another relationship emerged because of their union, desiblitz.com, a British news website, reported.

The girl’s 37-year-old mother became attracted to her son-in-law’s elder brother, aged 22. They regularly saw each other as he worked in Pathankot which is close to Gurdaspur and decided to get married.

The woman divorced her husband in order to get married for the second time and on October 2, 2019, she married her son-in-law’s brother, who is 15 years younger than her, in the Indian village of Malikpur.

However, according to the report, the daughter was not aware of their relationship and was surprised to see her mother arrive with her brother-in-law to the home she lived in.

The matter came to light on October 14, 2019 and the families of both the partners opposed the marriage.

However, after the conflict escalated and the couple wanted to remain married, they went to court in order to seek protection from their families.

The woman’s petition for protection is to be heard on October 31, 2019.
