ICC begins probe into Myanmar crimes against Rohingya

The first step has been taken; it could lead to formal charges by the Hague-based court

The Hague: The prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) said on Tuesday she had opened a preliminary probe into allegations that Myanmar forcibly deported Rohingya people to Bangladesh.

Fatou Bensouda said in a statement that she would carry out a "full-fledged preliminary examination of the situation at hand" - the first step in a process that could lead to a formal investigation and charges by the Hague-based court.
