Coronavirus: US COVID-19 deaths surpass total Vietnam war toll

Rise of 2,207 fatalities in last 24 hours brings total to over 58,365

Washington: The number of daily deaths from coronavirus rose again in the US Tuesday after the total toll earlier surpassed those killed in the Vietnam War, a tally from Johns Hopkins University showed.

In a 24-hour period to 8.30pm (4.30am UAE), there were 2,207 additional deaths, the Baltimore-based university said, after the daily deaths had fallen to around 1,300 on Sunday and Monday.

The pandemic has killed more than 58,365 people in the US, the tally showed. According to the National Archives, 58,220 Americans were killed in combat and from and other causes during years of war in Southeast Asia.
