Pedestrian given priority for road crossing in residential areas and near schools, hospitals

Abu Dhabi: Abu Dhabi Police have rolled out a new initiative focused on giving priority to pedestrian crossings in residential areas, schools and hospitals.

The Abu Dhabi Police General Command urged drivers to prioritise pedestrian safety in residential areas, schools, and hospitals, particularly on roads where the speed limit is 40 km/h or less, even in the absence of marked crossings.

The Traffic and Patrol Directorate emphasises the importance of cautious driving, encouraging motorists to reduce speed, avoid distractions, and comply with lower speed limits. They stress that pedestrian safety is a shared responsibility between drivers and pedestrians.

Drivers who fail to yield to pedestrians at designated crossings face a fine of Dh500 and six traffic points.

Now, residential neighbourhoods, and schools, and hospitals areas are considered pedestrian zones, regardless of marked crossings.

To raise awareness, the Abu Dhabi Police recently launched a campaign focused on pedestrian safety and the importance of following traffic regulations.

Through social media and in collaboration with the Monitoring and Control Center, the police have shared real-life videos illustrating the dangers associated with crossing in unauthorized areas.

The Directorate also encourages pedestrians to utilise designated crossing areas, such as pedestrian bridges and tunnels, and to heed traffic signals at intersections that coordinate with vehicle signals.

The Abu Dhabi Traffic and Patrols Directorate reiterates that pedestrian safety remains a key strategic priority. Ongoing efforts to enhance traffic safety include constructing pedestrian bridges, improving crossings, creating signal-regulated surface crossings, and installing fences along various roads.

Drivers are reminded to remain vigilant and reduce speed in areas where pedestrians may be crossing, reinforcing the idea that pedestrian safety is a collective responsibility.
