Indian businessman Maghanmal Jethanand Pancholia remembered on 100th birth anniversary, in Dubai

He was known for his business acumen and philanthropy

Dubai: Maghanmal Jethanand Pancholia, one of the oldest businessmen in Dubai, is remembered fondly by family and friends on his 100th birth anniversary.

Also known as ‘Magabha’, he is remembered for the impact he made in business and philanthropy. Born in 1924 in Thatta, Sindh (formerly undivided India), Pancholia lived a life of dedicated to his family and the betterment of society.

Pancholia passed away in 2019, at the age of 95.

His son, Dr Lalchand Pancholia, said: “He moved to Dubai in 1942, to join the family’s pearl-trading business, marking the beginning of his professional journey. His innovative ideas and strong work ethic quickly set him apart. His vision and determination were evident as he diversified his business into textiles, watches, electronics, steel, and real estate.

“His ability to navigate challenges and seize opportunities not only led to his personal success but also paved the way for others.

In 1957, along with a few like-minded businessmen, he set up the Indo-Arab Electricity Company, the first company to provide electricity to Dubai.”

Beyond his professional achievements, he was renowned for his philanthropy. He always believed that true success is measured by the positive impact one has on others.

Rajkumar Pancholia, his son, added: “His commitment to education led him to establish ‘The Indian High School’ in Dubai, ‘P.J. Pancholia School’ in Mumbai and his contribution to many other institutions help broaden access to education.

“His autobiography, ‘Footprints: Memoirs of an Indian Patriarch’, chronicles his life’s journey and the transformation of Dubai into a bustling cosmopolitan city.”

Through various initiatives and charitable contributions, Pancholia touched the lives of many, providing support to those in need and fostering a sense of community.

He passed away in 2019, at the age of 95.
