Dubai: A diamond worth Dh300,000 (about $81,081) stolen by a couple in Dubai has been recovered within less than 20 hours, an official said on Sunday.

The diamond as recovered in India 20 hours after it was smuggled out of the UAE inside the stomach of a woman, an official said.

The Chinese pair grabbed the 3.27-carat gem from a jewellery shop in Dubai's Naif area on October 22 and fled the country on the same day.

The owner discovered the missing diamond and alerted the police after three hours after the incident.  

“The couple were identified within a short time and with cooperation with the Indian authorities, the suspects were arrested in the transit area in India as they were trying to smuggle the diamond to their home country,” Major General Abdullah Khalifa Al Merri, Commander in Chief of Dubai police said.

The suspects were back on the first flight to Dubai following cooperation with Interpol.

They confessed to the robbery, said police.
