The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has dismissed as false the claims circulating on social media about monetary contributions being collected in connection with the Nimisha Priya case.
In a post shared on X, the ministry’s fact-check handle stated: “We have seen claims being made on social media seeking monetary contributions into a GoI-designated bank account in the Nimisha Priya case. This is a fake claim.”
The clarification came after posts urged people to donate directly to what was alleged to be a government account to raise funds for the case. The MEA urged the public not to fall for such misinformation or engage with such appeals.
The ministry also reiterated that Nimisha Priya’s execution in Yemen, earlier scheduled for 16 July, has been postponed following India’s diplomatic interventions. However, it emphasised that reports suggesting her death sentence has been fully overturned are incorrect.
“This is a sensitive matter. The Government of India has been extending all possible assistance in the case. As a result of our concerted efforts, the sentencing has been postponed,” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said during his weekly briefing.
He added that India continues to monitor the case closely and remains in touch with “friendly governments” while working with Yemeni authorities to explore every possible option.
Nimisha Priya, a 37-year-old nurse from Kerala, was convicted of murdering her Yemeni business partner, Talal Abdo Mahdi, in 2017. She was sentenced to death in 2020, and the verdict was upheld by Yemen’s Supreme Judicial Council in November 2023.
Over the years, her family and several organisations have appealed for clemency, urging the Indian government to intensify diplomatic and legal efforts.
Jaiswal had earlier confirmed that New Delhi appointed a lawyer to assist the family navigate the Yemeni legal system under Sharia law. Regular consular visits have also been arranged to provide necessary support.
The spokesperson appealed to the media and public to rely only on official updates.
“Reports claiming that there have been certain developments are incorrect. Please wait for an update from us. We urge all sides to stay away from misinformation,” Jaiswal stressed.
The government continues its efforts to secure more time for Priya’s family to reach a settlement with the victim’s relatives, seen as a potential path to clemency under Yemeni law.
