Baghdad: An Al Qaida training camp north of Baghdad that contained a stock of large weapons including missiles, machine guns and mortar rounds was destroyed by US troops last week, the US military said on Wednesday.
The camp was stationed in the town of Balad, in Salahuddin province. US Special Forces attacked it after intelligence reports suggested insurgents were using an old radar station, the military said in a statement.
The cache included more than 20,000 rounds of ammunition, surface-to-air missiles, machine guns, rockets, suicide-vest charges, mortar rounds, a rocket-propelled grenade launcher and warheads, the statement said.
The US military said airstrikes confiscated or destroyed the weapons after the raid, which was conducted from April 2-5.
