Tehran: Ten student activists were taken into police custody on Sunday after they held a protest at being banned from enrolling at universities, the Fars news agency reported.

Activists said some of those detained have been outspoken against Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his government.

"Police arrested 10 student activists for staging an illegal protest in front of parliament," Fars reported.

"The students, two women and eight men who claimed to be banned from enrolling at universities, were taken away by a police minibus," according to the news agency.

The report did not say where the students were being held.
